Osaka Itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 Days With Opening Hours

A one, two and three day Osaka itinerary built on opening hours and closing days: castle and Dotonbori, Shinsekai and Tennoji, then Nakanoshima and Umeda.

How it's made

The days below build on each other. Do day 1 if you’ve only got one, add day 2 for two, and add day 3 for three. Each stop uses the hours and closing days on its official page as stored on Roam’s map, and the walking order follows the nearest stations. Not sure how long to stay? Read how many days in Osaka first.

Day 1: Osaka Castle and Dotonbori

Morning, Osaka Castle. Osaka Castle Park is open at all times, and its stations are Osakajokoen and Morinomiya on the JR Loop Line and Tanimachi 4-chome on the Tanimachi Line. The Main Tower takes last entry at 17:30 and is closed from 28 December to 1 January. You’ll want one to two hours for the tower and two for the park. The Nishinomaru Garden is closed on Mondays, and the Osaka Museum of History closes the next day when Tuesday is a holiday.

Midday, Kuromon Market. Kuromon Market is a covered market by Nippombashi Station on the Sennichimae Line. Hours and closing days vary by shop, so it’s best to go with a loose plan.

Afternoon, Dotonbori. Walk the Tonbori Riverwalk from Namba Station, then see the Glico Sign, which is lit from sunset to 24:00. Behind the canal, Hozenji Yokocho is an alley about 80 m long.

Evening, dinner. Kushikatsu Daruma Dotonbori has no closing day and takes last orders 30 minutes before closing. Okonomiyaki Mizuno is open all year with last order at 21:00. Dotonbori Imai Honten takes last order at 21:00. It’s closed on Wednesdays (unless the Wednesday is a public holiday) and on the fourth Tuesday of each month except December.

Day 2: Shinsekai and Tennoji

Morning, Shitenno-ji. Shitenno-ji opens at 8:30 and, from October to March, closes at 16:00. From April to September it closes at 16:30. Stop at the Keitakuen Garden next, which takes last entry at 16:30 and is closed on Mondays, so on a Monday go to Shitenno-ji and skip the garden.

Afternoon, Tennoji and Abeno. The Harukas 300 Observatory takes last entry at 21:30, which makes it a late-afternoon or evening stop you’ll have time for. Special hours are announced on its site, so they’re worth a look.

Evening, Shinsekai. Shinsekai has no set hours and each shop decides its own. Tsutenkaku takes last entry to the general deck at 21:15. The outdoor deck can close in bad weather without notice, so don’t count on it. Covered Janjan Yokocho holds kushikatsu and doteyaki restaurants, and Kushikatsu Daruma Shinsekai Sohonten is open every day of the year. Spa World is the place for a bath.

Day 3: Nakanoshima, Umeda and the north

Morning, Nakanoshima. Nakanoshima Park is open at all times. The Osaka City Central Public Hall is closed on the fourth Tuesday of each month and from 27 December to 4 January. The National Museum of Art, Osaka takes last admission at 16:30, or 19:30 on Fridays.

Afternoon, Umeda. The Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory takes last entry at 22:00, so it works as an evening stop. The rooftop may close in heavy rain, so it’s one to check on the day. Ohatsu Tenjin is close, with the shrine office open 9:00 to 18:00.

Evening, Tenma. The covered Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street is next to Minami-morimachi Station on the Sakaisuji Line and Tenma on the JR Loop Line. Each shop sets its own hours. Read the Tenma guide and the Umeda guide.

Swap day 3 for Osaka Bay or a day trip

Osaka Bay suits families and wet weather. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan sets its hours date by date, and the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel is nearby, both from Osakako Station on the Chuo Line. See Osaka with kids. For Nara, Himeji or Koyasan, use the day trips guide.

Adjust for the weather and the calendar

Use the rainy day list if it pours, and the free things to do list to balance paid sights. For the right season, see the best time to visit Osaka. For dated events, events lists what’s on across Osaka and this weekend shows the next few days. If you’d like a gig in the evening, the live music page lists them.

If you’ll use a lot of trains and paid sights in a day, compare Osaka passes with paying separately. The trip cost page has the admission figures. Arriving by air? See Kansai Airport to Osaka. To choose a base, read where to stay in Osaka.
