Osaka Castle

A 105.6-hectare park, a rebuilt keep and a boat on the moat

Osaka Castle Park covers 105.6 hectares of moats, stone walls and plum trees, and the keep at its centre was rebuilt in 1931 as a museum of the Toyotomi era. Most of what's here is spread across the park, so plan on walking more than you expect. It's a day-trip district rather than a place with much to do after dark.

The Main Tower is open from 9:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30, and adults pay ¥1,200. Go at 9:00, because the castle may stop selling tickets early on busy days. The observation deck on the top floor looks out over the park. The Gozabune, a gold-coloured boat, circles the inner moat in about 20 minutes. Tickets go on sale at 9:30 and the last departure is 16:30.

The park itself is free and open at all times, though each facility inside keeps its own hours. Late March brings cherry blossom, and Nishinomaru Garden holds about 300 trees, mostly Somei Yoshino. The garden is closed on Mondays and costs ¥200. The plum grove has about 1,245 trees of 105 varieties. Osaka-jo Hall hosts concerts, so check its schedule before you pick a day, since event crowds fill the nearby stations.

Getting there

Osakajokoen and Morinomiya stations on the JR Loop Line both serve the park, and Morinomiya is also on the Chuo Line. Tanimachi 4-chome, on the Tanimachi and Chuo lines, is the closest stop to the history museum.

Where to eat and what else is nearby

Miraiza Osaka-jo is a 1931 building in the park, built as the headquarters of the Imperial Army's 4th Division. It now holds shops, cafes and restaurants, with facility hours of 9:00 to 22:00 and each shop setting its own. Lunchtime works well after the keep. Hokoku Shrine, for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is free to enter. Tamatsukuri Inari Shrine is a 5-minute walk from Morinomiya or Tamatsukuri stations, and the Naniwa Tamatsukuri Museum on its grounds shows ancient jade and pottery. The records for this area hold only a few restaurants, so for a full meal you'll head back toward the city centre.

Where to stay: there's little reason to sleep inside the park area. Hotels near Morinomiya and Tanimachi 4-chome stations put you a short ride from the castle on the JR Loop Line, Chuo Line and Tanimachi Line, but most visitors base elsewhere in the city and come for half a day.
