Nakanoshima and Kitahama

Brick halls, stone libraries and bridges across the river in the middle of town

Nakanoshima is a strip of land between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers, and Osaka's first city park opened there in 1891. Most of its buildings are old civic ones or museums. Kitahama on the south bank has a surviving merchant house and a 1912 building with a tea room.

The park runs about 1.5 km and its rose garden peaks in mid-May and mid-October. Osaka City Central Public Hall is a red-brick hall finished in 1918 and an Important Cultural Property. The Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library, built in 1904, is a domed stone building that's also free to enter.

Three museums sit along the island, and all of them close on Mondays. Yodoyabashi Bridge carries Midosuji across the Tosabori river and about 70,000 people cross it each day. Naniwabashi, the Lion Bridge, is one minute from Kitahama Station.

Getting there

Yodoyabashi Station, on the Midosuji Line and Keihan, is the main stop. Kitahama is on the Sakaisuji Line and Keihan. For the museums, use Higobashi on the Yotsubashi Line or Watanabebashi on the Keihan Nakanoshima Line.
