A merchant house in Kitahama that Ogata Koan, a Dutch-learning physician and teacher who lived from 1810 to 1863, ran as a school at the end of the Edo period. It's a surviving wooden townhouse that Osaka University looks after.
Insider tip
Entry is ¥270 for adults and ¥140 for students. Closed Mondays, the day after a public holiday and over the New Year break. It's a 5-minute walk from Yodoyabashi or Kitahama stations, and a visit takes under an hour.

Tekijuku Special Opening (Ikefes Osaka 2026)
旧緒方洪庵住宅[適塾] 特別公開

During Ikefes Osaka the kitchen and earthen-floor area, normally closed to visitors, is opened and explained by student staff, about 10 minutes per tour with no booking. Going inside the building to the regular public areas still needs the normal admission fee. The house is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.

The switch-on of the year's Midosuji lights, with part of the avenue opened to pedestrians. It goes ahead in the rain and is cancelled only in severe weather.
Nakanoshima Rose Garden, Spring Bloom

About 3,700 plants of 310 varieties bloom in the rose garden on Nakanoshima, a park open at all times. The city gives late April to late May as the spring season. The 2027 dates haven't been announced yet.

NAKANOSHIMA ART LIGHTS 2026 ～水辺を巡る、光の芸術～

Light installations run from the rose garden to the Hanshin Expressway overpass, including suspended light orbs, rose-bouquet pieces that light the roses when touched, a projected pattern on Barazono Bridge and a light-and-mist piece. On 23 to 25 October a lit hot-air balloon (19:00 to 21:30), three live sets a night from 18:20 of jazz, R&B and soul, and a wine bar are added on the lawn plaza. Admission is free with no reservation. The lights go ahead in rain but may be moved or switched off in severe weather, and the balloon can be cancelled for rain or wind.
