Shinsekai

Fried skewers under Tsutenkaku and a bath open all night

Shinsekai is a downtown district around Tsutenkaku whose origins go back to 1903 and the Fifth Domestic Industrial Exposition. The streets below the tower are loud with signs, including a giant pufferfish lantern, and the area is built around fried skewers. Late afternoon is when most shops are open.

Tsutenkaku is the tower at the centre of everything. The general deck costs ¥1,500 for adults, and a golden deck on the 5th floor holds the Billiken statue. Entry is by timed ticket and evening slots can sell out, so book online. Dusk is a good time, since you see the district light up.

Kushikatsu is the local dish, and the Kushikatsu Daruma flagship has 12 counter seats. It takes no reservations, takes cash only and asks every person to order a drink. Expect to spend ¥1,500 to ¥2,500. Janjan Yokocho is a covered street of about 50 shops, with kushikatsu and doteyaki restaurants along it.

Getting there

Ebisucho station on the Sakaisuji Line is directly beside the district. Dobutsuen-mae, on the Midosuji and Sakaisuji lines, is about 3 minutes on foot. Shin-Imamiya is the JR stop nearest Spa World.

Other things to do

Spa World has two themed zones, a European one on the 4th floor and an Asian one on the 6th, which swap between women's and men's use each month. The baths stay open overnight until 8:45 the next morning. Tennoji Zoo is a short walk away inside Tennoji Park. It costs ¥800, takes last entry at 16:00 and closes on Mondays. Luna Park, the paid amusement park that once stood south of the first Tsutenkaku, has closed.

Where to stay: the district puts you beside the Sakaisuji and Midosuji lines, which makes it easy to reach the rest of the city. Many people stay in Namba or Tennoji instead and walk or ride in for the evening.
