Namba

Curry, pork buns and a comedy theatre around the big station

Namba is the transport hub of Osaka's Minami side, and most of the area's sights sit within a few minutes of its exits. Hozenji Yokocho, a stone alley about 80 metres long, runs beside a temple with a moss-covered statue that people splash with water. The kitchen-tool street, the comedy theatre and a rooftop garden are all close by.

Namba works as a base because so many lines meet here. The Midosuji, Sennichimae and Yotsubashi lines of Osaka Metro stop at Namba, and so do Nankai and Kintetsu. That puts the area near both Dotonbori to the north and Nipponbashi to the east.

Food is the main reason to linger. Jiyuken is a long-running yoshoku restaurant whose curry has the sauce mixed into the rice, and the Namba shop is a 2-minute walk from exit 11. The 551 Horai takeout counter is about a minute from the same exit. Neither takes long, so they fit between trains.

Getting there

Namba Station is on the Osaka Metro Midosuji, Sennichimae and Yotsubashi lines, and Nankai and Kintetsu trains stop here too. The Midosuji line runs straight through the middle of Osaka. If you're heading to Namba Hatch, use exit 26-B.

What to see

Hozenji Temple is tucked behind Dotonbori. Pour water over the Fudo Myoo statue and make one wish. The Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum stands in front of the approach, with kabuki actor prints from Osaka and Kyoto. Entry is 700 yen for adults, and there's no elevator, so the upper galleries are reached by stairs.

Namba Grand Kagetsu is Yoshimoto Kogyo's comedy theatre, and shows are in Japanese. Sennichimae Doguyasuji is the cooking-tool street nearby, with kitchen knives, noren curtains and the plastic food samples restaurants put in their windows. Namba Yasaka Shrine is a small neighbourhood shrine south-west of the station.

Where to eat and drink

Takoyaki Wanaka on Sennichimae opens at 8:30 on weekends and 10:00 on weekdays. Marufuku Coffee, founded in 1934, serves morning service on weekdays only. Arabiya Coffee near Hozenji opens at noon on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, and it sometimes closes on Wednesdays.
