Tennoji

A 300 m tower, a head temple and small shrines on the old pilgrimage road

Tennoji sits around two very different landmarks. Abeno Harukas is a 300 m tower with an observatory on floors 58 to 60, and Shitenno-ji is the head temple of the Washu sect. Between them are museums, a garden and a handful of small shrines that few visitors reach.

Harukas 300 Observatory is open from 9:00 to 22:00, with last entry at 21:30. Same-day tickets are ¥2,200 for adults and sold at the 16th floor counter. They can't be refunded and you can't re-enter. The 60th floor is a glass corridor with views in every direction, and on clear days you can see from Kyoto to Awaji Island. Sunset is the best time to go.

Shitenno-ji's central temple area costs ¥500 and the Gokuraku-jodo garden ¥300. The gate stays open around the clock. On the 21st and 22nd of each month the central area is free, which is also when the grounds are busiest. A Treasure Hall exhibition runs from 10 October to 29 November 2026. Isshin-ji, known as the temple of the Bone Buddha, is a few minutes' walk from Tennoji Park.

Getting there

Tennoji and Osaka Abenobashi stations serve Harukas. Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka is the stop for Shitenno-ji and Isshin-ji, and Tanimachi 9-chome on the Tanimachi Line is the closest for Ikukunitama Shrine. The Hankai tram runs to Higashi-Tengachaya, near the two southern shrines.

Beyond the tower

Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts is in Tennoji Park and charges ¥500 for its collection displays, with special exhibitions priced separately. Both it and Keitakuen are closed Mondays. Ikukunitama Shrine began at the site where Osaka Castle later stood and moved here in 1583, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the castle.

Where to stay: Tennoji is a transport hub, so the surrounding blocks put you on several lines at once. Stays near Tennoji or Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka stations suit a trip built around temples and the tower, and Shinsekai and Tennoji Zoo are close by.
