A park of about 660 hectares across the eastern side of Nara, home to roughly 1,300 wild deer. The deer are a designated national natural treasure and are counted as the divine messengers of Kasuga Taisha.

Insider tip

Free to enter and open all year. There are no litter bins, so take your rubbish with you. Feed the deer only shika senbei, the deer crackers sold in the park, and don't tease them. It's an 8-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station.

On 15 August a joint Shinto and Buddhist memorial service is held around 19:00 at Tobihino, and the Daimonji bonfire on Takamado-yama is lit at 20:00.

Time 17:30 to 20:00 on 7, 14, 21 and 28 Nov (last entry 19:45) Station Kasuga Taisha Honden bus stop (bus from JR Nara or Kintetsu Nara)

On four Saturdays you can make a night visit to the National Treasure main shrine, when about 1,000 hanging lanterns in the corridor are lit. The special worship fee is ¥700 and no reservation is needed.
