The middle gate of the Daibutsuden opens at midnight on New Year's Day and entry is free until 08:00. The doors at the front of the hall are opened so visitors can see the Great Buddha's face. A bonfire near Kagamiike pond is lit around 23:00 on New Year's Eve, braziers burn along the approach and the stone lanterns around Nigatsu-do are lit.

東大寺 二月堂 節分

Old charms are burned from about 10:00. Beans are thrown from the Nigatsu-do stage at about 14:00 after a service, then beans and bells from a stage in front of the Hokke-do, where visitors can catch them. A star-offering service is held at 18:00 under the lamps.

After Shuni-e ends, children have the dattan hat worn by the monks during the rite placed on their heads to wish for healthy growth. From about 10:00 to 15:00.

A service from 08:00 to about 09:00 on 8 April in front of the Daibutsuden. Afterwards, visitors can pour sweet tea over the infant Buddha at the flower pavilion and drink some themselves.
